Painted in the mid 1880s, this features a busy Parisian street in the rain. Strangely, it does not focus on a subject as most paintings do but instead, tries to capture the moment - an unconventional arrangement that several of the Impressionists attempted.
The Umbrellas is also significant because it was painted in two stages. The first had the bright, pure colours of Impressionism and the second, a muted palette. This marks Renoir’s disillusionment with Impressionism and a shift back to more traditional art. (Look at the ladies - the one on the left has the more muted palette.)
