Yoshitoshi was one of last exponents of the ukiyo-e genre in traditional woodblock printing. One of the greatest Japanese artists of his era, what you see here is one of the last examples of a dead art - the lithograph and the photograph soon took over this traditional art.
Teasing The Cat, painted in 1888 is a polychrome woodblock print and features a lady at play with her amused cat. Considering cats are not native to Japan - they came on Chinese ships a 1000 years ago - the obsession of Japanese artists with cats, is surprising.
