Proserpine is abducted by Pluto, ruler of the underworld. Her grieving mother Ceres, goddess of agriculture, turns the world barren. Jupiter orders Pluto to release Proserpine. Pluto obliges, but gives her a pomegranate to eat. This traps her in the underworld - for those who eat the food of the dead cannot return to the world of the living and she is forced to live six months every year with Pluto, and the rest with her mother.
Rossetti captures her distress with symbolism. The pomegranate signifies captivity; the incense burner, the attribute of a goddess; the curve of the ivy and her arm, clinging memory.
