Monna Vanna, translates to a vain woman, inspired by Vita Nuova by poet Dante Alighieri, after whom Rossetti takes his first name. Originally titled Venus Veneta, or, the Venetian ideal of female beauty, the piece is part of his 1860s series on beautiful, sensual women.
Considered by Rossetti as his one of his best works, it depicts a young affluent beauty in rich drapery, who inconsiderately looks away from the viewer. The circular composition is accentuated by the green rosettes, the swinging motion of her arm and the spiral pearl clasps in her auburn hair.
The model is Alexa Wilding, who sat for some of Rossettis best-known works.
