While Victorian art typically portrayed people of color as mere decorative figures, and rarely as models of idealized beauty, Rossetti employed Fanny Eaton, Jamaican born domestic worker and the daughter of a slave, as the model for some of his most prestigious paintings, including The Bride.
Easily distinguished by her uncanny features, Eaton featured in the works of the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood co-founded by Rossetti and six other artists, between 1859 and ’67.
Rossetti was often said to praise Eaton for her incomparable beauty which was unheard of, given the rigid beauty standards and intense racial prejudices existing at the time.
